Changing Campus Culture - Mark McNeilly

Mark McNeilly has been actively engaged for several years in changing campus culture, promoting institutional neutrality, researching self-censorship on campus, and studying tenure and free expression.

Mark initiated the adoption of the Chicago Statement by UNC Faculty, co-authored research on student self-censorship for 8 North Carolina system universities, is a co-founder of UNC’s Heterodox Campus Community, “Heterodox Heels,” created a UNC faculty listserv to discuss academic freedom issues, created an academic freedom resource website, works with the UNC Alumni Free Speech Alliance to help host their events, and writes and speaks on these issues within the state and nationally.

He is a member of UNC’s Committee on Academic Freedom and Free Expression (the creation of which he initiated) and an advisory board member of its Program for Public Discourse.
